📢 New mandatory training for UK seafarers

Aug 20 2026

SUMMARY

The MCA has issued MGN 718 (M+F), implementing IMO Resolution MSC.560(108). This adds a new mandatory STCW competence: contributing to the prevention of and response to violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault. This replaces the earlier MIN 729 guidance

DO YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION?

You must complete a short, free e-learning module if you fall into any of the categories below:

  • Your PSSR certificate is dated before 1 January 2026
  • You hold a UK Certificate of Competency (CoC)
  • You hold a UK Certificate of Proficiency (CoP)
  • You are a UK-certified officer or rating

You do NOT need to take the module if your MCA-approved PSSR certificate is dated on or after 1 January 2026 – the new content is already built into current courses.

HOW TO ACCESS FREE TRAINING

  • Access via shop.oceantg.com – search ‘0900’ and select the UK Certified Seafarers version
  • Apply coupon code mca_prvh26 at checkout to apply 100% discount
  • The module: ‘Prevention and Response to Violence & Harassment’ (ref. 0900), delivered by OneOcean takes around 1 hour, can be completed online or on your phone with no final assessment. It includes 16 lessons covering prevention, identification, response and reporting.

DEADLINE

Complete the module by 31 March 2027. Missing this deadline may affect certificate revalidation, compliance during Port State/Flag State inspections, and your eligibility to work at sea.

PROOF OF COMPLETION

On completion you’ll receive a digital OneOcean ‘Verification of Training’ document. Save this – it is accepted by the MCA as valid evidence and no separate MCA certificate is issued. Please also send a copy to your Clyde Marine Recruitment consultant for your file.
