Listening to Your Voices at Sea
The maritime sector has long been one of the most male‑dominated industries in the world, with women making up only a small fraction of the workforce, especially at sea. According to recent global surveys, women account for under 20 per cent of the maritime workforce overall, and just around 1-2 per cent of seafarers are women. These figures highlight not only the gender imbalance that persists but also the opportunity for meaningful change.
Behind these statistics are individual stories, challenges and achievements. Women seafarers frequently encounter barriers ranging from unconscious bias in recruitment and promotion to issues around workplace culture, work–life balance and safety. There is also growing evidence that women’s experiences at sea differ significantly from their male colleagues in ways that matter for retention and career progression.
To better understand these lived experiences, we are gathering firsthand accounts from women who work at sea. By sharing your stories through our survey, you are contributing to a body of evidence that will be used to create an industry report. This report aims to shine a light on what works well, what needs to improve, and how companies and regulatory bodies can foster a more equitable, inclusive maritime environment.
