3 Ways to get started in the Superyacht industry

Posted: October 4, 2017 at 12:06 pm

It can be difficult to get started in a niche industry such as superyachts, particularly if you lack experience.

But don’t worry!

We’ve put together 3 ways in which you can get started within the Superyacht industry, even though you may have little to no experience:

Extra Skills

Having the necessary certificates to work on a ship will not get you far in the superyacht industry.

If we’re being honest – you need to stand out and have a useful attribute or skill others don’t have!

Having worked in the superyacht recruitment industry for a number years, we always receive requests from superyachts looking for candidates with extra skills that goes above and beyond the statutory industry certification.

With something to differentiate yourself from the crowd, assuming superyacht Owners, Captains or Mangers will be more inclined to take a wild card entry, if you have something that can be of benefit to the vessel.

You may perhaps be a marine engineer or navigator that possesses technical knowledge, has specialist plant experience, or the ability to teach passengers about the stars, an avid sailor, windsurfer or water-ski instructor.

For catering ratings, being experienced in silver service is a must but having beautician skills, housekeeping or even a nursing qualification can set you a part. Or even just by having award winning cocktail or whiskey knowledge could get you the job – the list is endless.

The list below highlights some of the extra skills we have been asked to look for when recruiting for superyachts:

  • Photography
  • Videography
  • Water-sport instructor
  • Masseuse
  • Beauty therapy
  • Hairdressing
  • Artist
  • Yoga Instructor
  • Personal Trainer
  • Sommelier
  • Cocktail making experience
  • Nursing experience

Over the years we’ve even been asked to look for candidates holding extra certificates such as PADI Open Water Diver and Dive Instructor’s license.

Remember, always note on your CV if you any extra skills or qualifications that might be of interest to a Superyacht owner and it could get you, your first job on a superyacht.

Cruise Ship or 5 Star Hotel Experience

Having Cruise Ship or 5 Star Hotel Experience can make a difference in the Superyacht industry.

If you meet the statutory requirements, some superyacht owners will give you a position due to your previous experience within the luxury hospitality industry.

So, if you’re Steward or a Chef looking to enhance your CV why not take a position on a Cruise Ship or within a 5 Star hotel to gain some hospitality experience before starting your career in the luxury superyacht industry.

Think of it as a brief side step on the road you are looking to be on.

Being new isn’t a bad thing!

Superyachts are not a one size fits all kind of industry.

You will find that although there are general requirements for positions there really isn’t anything that will tell you how much experience you should have or where to get it.

That’s because the roles and requirements for positions on a superyacht are at the discretion of the owner.

Some ask for experience, whereas others would like to mould you themselves!
