Additional or Advanced Certificates to boost your CV

Additional or advanced certificates

When you have been working within the maritime industry for over 35 years, like we have, you start to notice changes…

Most recently we have seen that many clients are looking for more than just the mandatory requirements when recruiting from all ranks.

So, what does this mean?

This can mean two things, firstly depending on the client, non-mandatory requirements could be a company requirement for working on their vessels. For example, some clients require Motorman to have an Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate and will not accept any candidates that only have Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, even though this is all that is required from Motorman.

On the other hand, a non-mandatory requirement may be desirable, however a client is not going to accept a candidate who doesn’t have the desirable certificate over a candidate who does. For example, some companies would like candidates from all ranks to have Crowd Management and Crisis Management and Human Behaviour certificates. Although it is not necessary for the position, if it’s between a candidate who has these certificates or a candidate who doesn’t have the certificates, the candidate with the certificate is more likely to get the job.

All in all, having additional and advanced certificates will work in your favour when applying for jobs therefore it could be in your interest to consider getting them. However, please note there are other factors at play when recruiting, such as experience.

The following list below shows the additional or advanced certificates that clients are asking us to bear in mind whilst recruiting for them*:

  • Crowd Management
  • Designated Security Duties
  • Ship Security Officer (Chief Officers only)
  • Safety Officer (Chief Officers only)

  • Seafarers holding an ERWR certificate without the STCW notation “STCW Convention 1978, as amended” are recommended by the MCA to update their certificates to avoid any possible non-conformity in the eye of Port State Control Officer out with the UK. This can be done by using application form ‘MSF 4371’, this form is available on the MCA website gov.uk/mca.

ETO:

  • Crowd Management
  • Designated Security Duties
  • Need proof of electrical experience (Some clients are unable to accept candidates purely based on “years of experience”)

*Please note that even with additional or advanced certificates you will not automatically get positions other factors do come into the recruiting process however getting these certificates will help to increase your chances.
