A View From The Bridge

Dec 02 2022

Four busy quarters, Three Prime Ministers, Two reigning Monarchs and a Partridge in a pear tree.

It’s been a monumental year for the UK with significant changes to our government and the Monarchy. In the CMR offices we have continued to move through a red-hot market for seafarers in 2022 which has only been possible by embracing technology.

In the past 12 months, we have assisted in preparing and issuing 5000 seafarer employment agreements using automation. This saved 2500 hours of manual administration and enabled our team more time to focus on filling the jobs faster and more efficiently. It has afforded the team more time to speak with clients and seafarers and our crew management team have been able to fill their own vacancies without needing to involve the recruitment team.

From a jobseeker’s perspective the online system means that they can complete their profile once and keep documents and assignments up to date which means applying for jobs becomes a simple click. They also have their payslips, SEA’s and other employment documentation in their profile. Additionally, those with completed profiles are recognised by our recruitment team and are easier to place in new roles as all the information is available for our clients to view.

From an employer’s point of view, the system provides full visibility on all seafarer credentials alongside the contract documentation enabling them to make more informed, substantive employment decisions. The feedback we have received from our clients has been encouraging.

“Clyde Marine Recruitment are a one stop shop for all your crewing needs from recruitment to payroll. Market leaders in recruitment. IT with apps and Portals at your fingertips ensuring we get the right crew, right certification in the right place.”

This year we rolled out ID verification to ensure we meet the key requirements for fiduciary compliance and reduce the risk of fraud.  These identity checks match the standard and quality of those used by banks and lenders. Our candidates are requested to take a biometric selfie which is then compared to their identity document, once approved it remains valid until they update their ID document.

Overall, the feedback on our specialised endeavours has been very positive from our seafarers, clients, and other major stakeholders. Classification society and offshore employers have embraced the technological improvements winning us significant plaudits.

Challenges on the ground remain the same: a lack of UK ratings and how the future of this valuable resource can keep up with current and future demand.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
